Before this past season I was a very strong believer in NOT USING deer urine while hunting. I had NEVER had a deer come in while using a deer scent.
I decided to try Southern Whitetail Scents because of Pdaddy's post on Loudeer.com. I decided to do this on my own and then later was contacted by Jerome and asked to field test his products and tell the truth about them. Here are my findings:
Product # of Hunts............. Deer Seen.............. Bucks Seen
Hyper Heat........18.......................12..............................3
Hyper P...............8........................13..............................3
Hyper Rage.........4........................3................................0
No scent..............78.....................58..............................11
Comments:
Hyper P: I noticed a considerable difference in the reactions of the deer when they appeared. They were more calm and they fed more freely near the stand. Once 2 does followed the scent trail to a stand that was hunted. I find this an excellent cover scent and the use of this product has changed my mind about deer scents.
Hyper Heat: I used this product the most in attempts to coax the bucks out of the cutover. On occaisions I used this with Hyper Rage to present the illusion that a doe was with a buck used with grunts and rattling. Although my luck with this product did not help me some of the people either hunting my land or my brother did have success with it. For the first time in my life, I did have deer come to me when it was being used.
Hyper Rage: The one time deer came on me while I used this product they were nervous. Circumstances would probably make them nervous anyway because it was near the end of the season. I had made a scent trail on the east and west side of the West Plot. I used both Hyper Heat and Hyper Rage on each trail but one on each side of me while I was walking. A mature doe with two of this years fawns came to this area and fed. They were within bow range but I had taken only my ML that evening so I did not shoot the doe. The next evening I laid out the same scent trail with only Hyper Heat and a different doe with a fawn came to the same spot and they were more calm. Giving me a shot if I wanted it. Light conditions and peep sight made me hesitant to shoot.
Additional Coments: This year's gun season in my area was a very poor deer sighting year. This was not just my place but several of the people around me said the same thing. Once the first shot was fired the deer seemed to vanish. Most of my use of the scent was during the gun season. If the deer are nocturnal they just won't come out. Due to work I missed most of the rut. this is when Hyper Heat would probably have helped more. When it worked it worked. My brother had his 130 B&C buck come out right on his HH scent trail. He had several smaller bucks do the same thing. Doug had a spike under his stand for 1 hour licking the Hyper Heat on the ground at Austin Alley. I believe there is a learning process while using each of these products in the area that you hunt.
I was most impressed with Hyper P because of the calmness it seems to have on the deer. I will definitely be using it in bow season next year.
My brother is now a firm believer in Hyper Heat. Doug believes in it strongly and has used it before. I will continue to use it although I had no verifieable success this year. I know it did not scare the deer away because I had deer come in with it there. It just wasn;t the right buck.
Hyper Rage…well I didn't use it enough to make a judgement. I put it on active scrapes and on scent trails. This may have kept the smaller bucks away but the large ones just never showed themselves.
Hyper Wick…I found this the easiest way to use a wick. It is always fresh and you can pick it up and bring it back with you or just grind it into the ground because it is biodegradeable.
I found this year more of a learning process. Where and how to lay scent trails. I have a lot left to learn. I did not believe in using deer urine prior to this year but I will MOST DEFINITELY use Hyper P in the bow season because of what I have seen in the reactions of the deer. When the rut roles around I will be going more to the Hyper Heat but will not stop using the Hyper P.
It sort of like they say on Primo's Videos. This ain't Hollywood but it's the truth.
