This was one of the best weeks of the season for me. I had one new friend and two old friends come hunt with me.
The new friend, Rambow, has become a close friend over the past couple of years through Southern Bowhunting web site. The old friends are my neighbors from when I lived in Metairie. We have both moved since then. John and his son Jonathan (who still calls me Uncle Don), and John's wife Phyllis were really close to us. some of the best friends we ever had.
My wife saw Phyllis a few weeks ago and they talked about what used to be and what is going on now. John and I used to duck hunt together. John still hunts ducks but his son Jonathan hunts deer as well but doesn't have a place to hunt. One thing led to another and I gave John a call and asked him to come make a hunt with me. (Archery of course) He practiced up with his 20 year old compound and purchase a new PSE for Jonathan. They both practiced every day for several weeks before coming to make a hunt.
Well things weren't working out for them to come on time and Rambow and I had been planning to make a hunt together so I invited Rambow for November 18th and they were going to arrive on the 19th. Things turned around and they could make the 18th so we had enough places for everyone to hunt and we all hunted.
Rambow hunted 4-Trees for the 1st time this year. He saw 8 deer on that hunt. John went to hunt the T-Plot and could not get into the stand. He hunted from the ground under the stand and he was the only one to take a shot. He shot at a doe and thought he hit it but was a clean miss. Jonathan hunted the killing tree and had 5 deer come under him. He was waiting for a buck and figured there was time to get a doe later. I hunted the tripod at Koltons Korner and had 3 does come in gave me a quick opportunity if I wanted to take it and then left to go by Jonathan.
John and I went to look for blood and could not find a drop even following the path of the deer into the cutover. We could not locate the arrow either. We decided to look in the morning because it was going to be 33 degrees that night.
We all went to Sonny's Pizza for dinner and told war stories. Man, I had a great time.
Wednesday morning it was just three of us. Jonathan returned to the Killing Tree which he really liked and saw 6 deer. John hunted the South Stand on the West Plot located very near to 4 trees and saw 2 deer. I hunted the WOWOWO and saw 7 deer. On the way back just before I got to the west plot a fawn jumped out in the road in front of me. I stood still and it turned to look at me. I bobbed my head and it bobbed back and we continued to do this and she kept walking closer and closer to me. She got about 15 yards and had enough then ran off. John saw the entire thing and was amazed because we had talked about doing this the night before. He got to see it first hand.
Wednesday afternoon Jonathan couldn't get out of that Killing tree. He saw 6 deer and wound up shooting a doe. The funny part was that he missed it the first shot, the second shot knocked it down but didn't kill it so he used his third and last arrow to finish off the doe. Then the 6 point walks onto the field and right past him. OUT OF AMMO! That's ok he was elated with killing the doe.
John hunted the South stand on the West Plot and din't see a thing. I hunted the T-Plot and saw 7 deer and I had decided to take a doe because we are now seeing plenty of them. I wasn't intending on shooting one prior to this because of the lack of sightings this year. First a doe with a fawn comes out, shortly followed by a large doe and medium sized one. Well I recognize the large one from a leg injury and decide to take her. She was nervouse as can be. fed under me but faced me the entire time then looked right at me for a long time then walked away. Then a doe came in with twin fawns. They were not spotted but a little on the young side so I let her walk.
We took a few pictures of the doe and cleaned her and went to Sonny's again. Renewed old memories and new ones and went back to the camp.
Thursday morning. I slept in and let John and his son hunt. This time John hunted the Killing tree and Jonathan hunted Kolton's Korner. Before daylight the 6 point was feeding at KK and when daylight came and he finally turned broadside Jonathan drew but his arrow made noise on the rest and spooked the 6 point. It went over to where John was hunting but passed him quickly and went to the feeder. No shot opportunity was given.
We cleaned up and left going back to our busy life styles but decided to do it again before the season is over.
