I consider myself very safe when operating a 4-wheeler. I don't take risks and take the most safe path to any location. The hills on my place are steep and accidents can happen easily if you do not take precautions.
On August 16, 2009 I had just retrieved some hogs that we had killed in the trapped and had pulled up to the camp. My 4 year old grandson was sitting between my legs on the gas tank where I could keep him safe if anything were to happen. I had to back up the atv a few feet for my nephew to get some marking ribbon out the bag that I hang on the gun rack and was just sitting there talking.
I let down my guard so to speak. My grandson put his hands on the grips and pressed down all the way on the accelerator. There was a trailer behind me that the atv hooked on to and controlled the direction the atv would take no matter how I tried to steer it. The trailer hooked on to my brother's truck and sent us in a semi-circle . I tried to get my grandson's hand off the accelerator but he was gripping so hard I could not get his hand off.
The 4-wheeler hit the back of my brother's truck and turned over on it's side. I grabbed my grandson and held him on my chest as I fell. I hit the ground fairly hard (for an old man) and bumped the back of my head. My grandson had a bump above his eye that probably happened as we hit the back of my brother's truck and my head, shoulder, arm, wrist, and two fingers were hurting.
We both went to the doctor to have us checked out. Grandson is in good shape. I had to go get cat scanned. I am taking coumadin which thins my blood and bumps on the head need to be checked completely. Found out that I had a break in my spine from years ago. I'll make it though. My whole right side still hurts but I think I will be in shape for bow season.
I just want to let everyone know that when you have a young child on a 4-wheeler, even when you are not moving, don't let your guard down even for a second. Young kids don't understand what an accelerator is and don't know to let go of it. The entire event only took a couple of seconds with everyone watching and noone can do a thing to help. In that short of span I didn't think to hit the kill switch or turn off the key. It just happened to fast.
Thank God there was no great harm done.
