December 5, 2010 4:40pm according to the trailcam. 115 lb. doe My 20th deer and the 10th with a bow.
I was disapointed becasue I slept in that morning becasue of high winds and the 8 point called "Trick-R-Treat" was right in front of the Killing Tree for over a half hour. It was still windy but cold. 42 degrees when I left to go on the stand. I was bundled up pretty good. I brought the rifle and bow with me.
It was late in the hunt, around 4:30pm before I saw my first deer. It was twin fawns about 50 & 60 lbs. It wasn't long before they let me know something was behind the stand. Here came momma. Cro knows her well because she has been on the plot since day one. Very wary and always the one to alert the other deer. Today she just came in and went to the feed. I had moved the TC and the feed to the east about 15 yards putting it right on the edge of the cutover. The deer are more comfortable there.
I was able to draw undetected but it was a strain with all the heavy clothes I had on. The shot wasn't any more comfortable not being able to shoot to my right, more like in front of me. I practice this but it is not a good way to shoot. When I was confident of the shot I released. She jumped and I saw I didn't have a pass through. The arrow was back and high. I heard her run then stop and then crash (I think). I talked myself out of going to look for her because of how far back the arrow was. I knew I had at least liver but didn't know how far the arrow went into the chest cavity.
I stayed and waited for a buck. Just a spike, doe , and the twins came in before I left for the camp. I went to eat supper and think over the situation. I knew that if I bumped her I would lose her. If I left her then the coyotes had a great chance of finding her. If not the meat would be good because it was going to freeze again that night.
I talked with my brother on the phone and he convinced me to go look. She crash after running only 35 yards. Real good blood trail even though the wound was on top.
My doe shooting is over for the year. (I'm pretty sure anyway)
