1/1/11
My brother Paul and I were hunting hoping to catch the rut. He was on the W-Plot Box Stand and I was on the Killing Tree. I got to the stand shortly before 3:00 pm and readied everything for the hunt. I was on my Iphone passing a little time when a movement caught my eye. "Broken G2" a six point with a broken G2 making him actually a 5 point was walking out. I had already decided to pass on him from looking at trailcam pictures but I have been really desiring to kill a buck.
I adjusted my position in the stand to allow me to shoot more to the right and he caught sound or movement and looked my way. I froze and he went back to eating. He did that little quick picking up his head to look back thing that the does do all the time. He went back to feeding again. When he glanced into the cutover I got my bow off the hook and into position. With his head down I drew aimed and squeezed the release. He went down on a spine shot. He was still able to crawl somewhat and by the time I got another arrow ready he was in the cutover. I released another arrow but this one got deflected. (I still can't find that arrow.) I got down from the stand and got closer to finish him off.
I have been hard on myself this year trying to kill bigger bucks. Hunting with a bow it is not always possible. My management plan calls for a buck to be 2.5 years old to be shot with a bow and this one falls under the plan. I guess it is better management to shoot one on the lower end than a good 2.5 year old. This is what I did. Had I know what was to come later I would have let him walk. (See Kill # 22 "Uh Oh!")
