Pitch Fork
January 18, 2007 was the first time “Pitch Fork” was caught on a trail camera. The time was not set correctly on the camera but the date is correct give or take a few hours. This time of the year we see new bucks in the post rut period. He was the highest ranked B&C buck caught on camera for the 2006-07 season. The last time caught on TC was February 6, 2007. He then went into seclusion for the spring and early summer.
On July 5, 2007 I caught him at the bottom near Rock Ridge. He antlers were about half grown and in velvet. You could tell by the pictures that he had developed a taste for rice bran. This area is not a place that you want to disturb by driving a 4 wheeler in and out to check trail cameras so after a few times and not catching him again I moved the camera
To let the area rest
I eventually wound up with the camera on the East Food Plot. He made a couple of visits here then stopped coming.
I started baiting on the top of the ridge in another low traffic area. The Beech Tree Plot is off the normal path of traffic and an area that usually picks up a few pictures of bucks. I didn’t take him long to show up. Once he arrived he became a regular visitor.
During this time I was getting worried about scaring off the deer. There is no way to totally eliminate human scent while checking trail cameras. The more often I checked them the more scent I would be leaving in the area. Although I knew odds of killing this buck with a bow would be slim I had to take every precaution I could to learn about him while keeping a low profile. I placed an infrared camera in place of the traditional one and visited less often. He still came to this area.
In earl October I moved a trail camera to Kolton’s Korner. Pitch Fork soon became a regular customer here as well as at Rock Ridge.
