I hadn't hunted deer in over 20 years. My friend Paul Rodriguez invited me to hunt his land near Pinkneyville, MS. I asked my wife if she minded me starting to deer hunt again because if I did I know I have tunnel vision and would become obsessed with it. She told me that I had taken a rest from it when I needed to in order to raise the kids and that she had no objection to me starting again.
It was raining when I arrived at Paul's land and when I passed a dirt road while driving to the hunting spot I thought I saw a deer standing on the side of the road. I parked about 1/4 mile away and walked back to that location through the woods in the rain. I discovered that it was a stump that I had seen so I just decided to stay where I was on the ground and wait awhile. About an hour later I could see a young deer coming. when it came near me I could see that it was a button buck and knew I was not going to shoot it.
When it's sister walked up behind it and was slick headed I put my .243 rifle up slow but the deer bolted and ran uphill away from me. Both of the deer stopped and the slick headed one was in the open enough for a shot. When I fired the deer ran straight toward me passing just about 20 feet from where I was standing. It ran around a tree and didn't come out the other side. I found her laying in the grass just on the other side of the tree.
I drug her to the dirt road and went to pick up my car. I had a 96 quart ice chest in the trunk and was able to put the deer inside it easily. I stopped by Paul's on the way home but he wasn't there.
When I got home I put the ice chest in the garage and changed into some dry clothes. I called some friends and when I looked in the ice chest I discovered that it wasn't a little doe but a slick headed buck. No knobs whatsoever on its head.
So began my second round of deer hunting. I was hooked again but this time I was determined to learn more about the animal and this time be more productive in my hunts
