My brother, Paul, invited me to hunt with him at his place in Magnolia, MS. We arrived before dawn and proceeded to our stands. I hunted a lean-to stand on the road near a white oak area. Paul hunted the back plot. Late in the morning hunt I prayed for a legal buck. I had my eyes closed at the time. I heard a thump and opened my eyes. There was a buck on the road right in front of me. I looked closely at his head and he was only a spike. There was a 4 point or better rule in MS at the time. I had to let him walk.
Within minutes after the buck left, my brother came walking down the road. I asked if had seen the buck, but he had not. We talked for a couple of minutes and started walking back to the truck. When we passed the road to the front plot Paul said to wait here and he would see if anything was on the plot. When he returned he told me that two deer were on the plot and that I should go shoot one of them.
I stalked to the edge of the plot and when I saw them I knew I had to get further out in order to get a shot. I crawled on my belly until I got a clear view and took the larger of the two, which I thought were both does at the time. When I shot, it fell in its tracks. One of the few deer that I ever shot to do this. My brother, behind me shot at the other one. We could not find blood for his.
When we approached mine we saw that it was a button buck. It was a legal buck. My prayers had been answered.
There were no pictures taken of this deer.
