January 7, 2015’s morning hunt was at the Crow Foot. The wind was still and I had two deer show up, a 6 point and a doe. I rested the middle of the day and went to the Killing Tree early for an afternoon hunt.
The wind was very strong with gusts over 30 mph. By 4:45 pm it had calmed somewhat but still about 10 mph. Two yearling bucks came out. Pointless, Jr. is a want to be 6 point but none of the tines will score and Little Fork is a smaller 3 point. Both deer got nervous and left the plot early.
Shortly after, I noticed a deer that was already on the plot. It was to the left of the cutover near the Killing Tree. It stopped facing me on my left at about 25 yards. It was on alert and frozen. When I got my scope on it I could see it was an 8 point with nice bases but not a lot of spread. I thought for a few seconds then asked myself if I would be happy with this as my last deer of the season. I said yes and fired.
The buck did not move a muscle. I thought I had missed and my 30-06 jam master was jammed. But in another second the buck fell flat on its face dead. At that time I could see the body was small and realized it was not as big as I thought. He was a nice buck that should have walked. Yes, I am happy with him, but hopefully I have learned my lesson as not to use my last tag on a 2.5 year old deer.
