After returning from the Illinois hunt the deer sightings on My Brothers’ Place had dropped off to almost nothing. Deer were not on the plots in the evening very often. I started hunting the Crows Foot Stand often. On December 14, 2014 I was settled in the stand by 4:00 pm. About 4:25 pm I heard a deer walking in the creek coming from the west. When I turned to see it, all I saw was the back end as it approached a thick spot where it blocked my vision. I had no idea what the deer was but decided to have the scope on it when it got to the next opening.
I heard the deer start walking again but it did not show at the opening. The deer turned around and started walking back where it came from. At that time I noticed the antlers and body size. I had no idea which buck it was. He moved and stopped twice when he was in a small opening clear enough to take the shot. When I fired I could tell it was a hit. He was facing away from me so I aimed for behind the last rib. I watched him running up the creek until he was out of sight.
Eddie text me and I confirmed, “BBD”. He said he will be there in a few minutes to help look for him. When Eddie arrived I had just gotten all my gear out the tree and was ready to track. Good blood was present near the shot but it ran completely out very soon. We split up looking for sign. Eddie finally located him on a knoll in the creek. We took a few pictures and then drug him as far as we could. The last bit was deep water in the creek so we winched him across then loaded him in the buggy. This was not an easy task as we could not lift him up. We finally tied him off and looped the rope through the buggy and tied the other end to a tree. We then pulled him up into the bed of the buggy. We then drove back to the camp, went to eat and returned to do the follow up video and clean the deer. It was a long day but was well worth it. This is the biggest deer I have killed since 2007 and the heaviest verified weight that I have ever killed.
